User Defined Demographics Setup

Important!

Before deciding to implement User Defined Demographics, read User Defined Demographics Technical Information carefully to understand the limitations of this feature. Depending on how you want to use a particular demographic, it may not be practical if implemented as a User Defined Demographic and might instead need to be implemented differently as an extender column. If a particular field has business rules, is used in dues or other processing, needs to be placed on special forms, or is needed on eWeb or xWeb, then it should not be a User Defined Demographic.

User Defined Demographics are available in the following areas:

  • iWeb Individual Profile
  • iWeb Organization Profile
  • iWeb Event Registration Wizard
  • eWeb Individual Profile

They are not available in the following areas:

  • eWeb Event Registration
  • eWeb Organization Edit

The User Defined Demographics (UDD) feature lets you set up and obtain customizable demographic information about your customers without using the NetForum Toolkit. User defined demographics are available on Find pages (if a search control is added) and in the Query tool.

Usage

The Demographics Setup page allows you to define demographics that you want to collect about your members. There are Fifteen (15) fields for each different Type of Input available for you to work with. These input types are:

  • CheckBox (Flag) = Check Box
  • DateTextBox (Date) = Date Box
  • TextBox (Currency) = Currency (not pictured below)
  • TextBox (Integer) = Number (whole numbers ONLY)
  • TextBox (String) = Alphanumeric Text Box (limited to 50 characters-not pictured below)
  • TextBox (Text)
    • Alphanumeric Text Box (virtually unlimited characters-not pictured below)
    • Drop-down List
    • Multi-Select List

Note: Extender fields can be added through the Toolkit. These fields can also be set up to be pushed to MemberFuse.

Setting Up User Defined Demographics

To set up User Defined Demographics, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Demographics Setup page by clicking on the Individual Demographics Setup link, located under the Individuals tab (for organizations, click the Organization Demographics Setup link, located under the Organizations tab.)
  2. Locate an unused Caption field next to the Type of Input you wish to use for the User Defined Demographic.
  3. Enter the Caption for the User Defined Demographic. This is what all users will see on any forms where this demographic is displayed.
  4. Select the Order you wish this demographic to be in a list of demographics. Selecting number 1 will make it the first user defined demographic in a list.
  5. Select where you would like this demographic to be available.
    • Selecting Show Internally will make this demographic available on iWeb forms.
    • Selecting Show Externally will make this demographic available on eWeb forms.
    • Selecting Social Community will make this demographic available on your organization's MemberFuse site.
  6. Once you have completed entering your User Defined Demographics, click the Save button.

Setting Up Lists for User Defined Demographics

To setup a Drop-down List, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the Setup button at the far right of the row. This button is only available for the TextBox (Text) input type.
  2. Complete the fields as directed.

To setup a Multi-Select List, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the check box to the left of Setup button AND the Setup Button.
  2. When entering the values for a Drop-down or Multi-Select list, separate each value with a semi-colon (;).
  3. Click the OK button.

Note: You can also add Demographics information during Event Registration on the demographics on the Individual Event Registration Wizard and the Group Event Registration Wizard ONLY.

Multi-select values with colon

If you have multi-select values that contain a colon, such as times of the day, then you must enclose each value in brackets, for example, if you have a question: "Which times do you prefer?" then enter the allowable values in the following format:

[10:00 AM];[11:00 AM];[1:00 PM];[3:00 PM]

The data is saved in the database without enclosing bracket:

1:00PM,3:00PM
