SMTP Relay

SMTP relay can be provided by Abila at a cost, to clients that are not able to provide this through their own setup or third party vendor, to allow e-mails to be sent with the client's e-mail server IP address.

FAQ

  • How does SMTP relay work?

netFORUM is essentially a mail client for sending - it is not a mail server by itself. Sending internet mail must use an SMTP server. Our typical configuration is to use the customer's SMTP server. There are times where this is not possible, or not desirable. For example, we have customers with hosted email at a third party provider, and they will not allow relay for external clients.

In this case Abila can provide outbound SMTP relay service by sending email from the netFORUM "communicate" and "Messaging Engine." See cost section below.

Features of Service:

  • High availability and high capacity
  • Local network connection for low-latency
  • Send from whatever email address you want.
  • How does e-mail relayed through Abila's SMTP get around spam filters?

This is standard SMTP service. The mail servers have FQDNs and reverse DNS correctly configured, and we are on the AOL whitelist.

  • Are there any security issues?

The SMTP servers are only accessible from the Abila network, and they are restricted by specific IP.

  • How will e-mail blast work if SMTP relay is provided by Abila?

Marketing campaigns are significantly enhanced in speed, especially for larger quantities (>10k emails). Since the SMTP server is on a local network, latency is minimized, and performance is better than to a remote system.

Client Tasks

Note: The firewall will need to allow port 25 TCP traffic — this is the standard SMTP port. In addition, the SMTP server must allow relay to external domains for that IP address.
