Why am I Getting an Error Message When I Try to Process a Credit Card Transaction?

When you try to process a credit card transaction, if you get an error message that says ”There is an error with your card, please try again or enter a new card number, Credit Card Declined” it might be due to any number of reasons.

Things to note:

  • The most likely reason for the error message is that the user made an error when entering data.
  • Address and fraud filters are set up through PayPal/processor on the client’s end. This is not set up through Abila. netFORUM does not pass the address information through PayPal. PayPal verifies the zip code. Abila passes through the name, credit card type (Visa, MasterCard, etc.), credit card number, expiration date and zip code. Based on the approval from PayPal, Abila creates a transaction, or rollback. The reason for collecting the address is for shipping/billing purposes, for merchandise fulfillment, and for reports on the client’s end.
  • Abila is using the exact specifications that PayPal requires for accepting credit cards.
  • Abila only processes U.S. bank issued credit cards. Are the credit cards with the problem issued by a U.S. bank?
  • The error that Abila receives on the back end is: ”There is an error with your card, please try again or enter a new card number, Credit Card Declined”. This could occur because of a mix of data that is not being accepted (such as an extra digit in the zip code for example) or it could have something to do with your payment processor.
  • This issue could occur because the PayPal Web site is down or experiencing technical difficulties when the user was entering credit card information online.
  • netFORUM has been able to process several international credit cards without a problem (Germany, Sweden, France, and Canada for example).
